Grand'Maison has been the star of the Beijing Paralympics for Canada. The 19-year-old swimmer smashed the world record in the 400-metre freestyle for the S13 visually impaired Monday, outdistancing Russian Anna Efimenko by 8.73 seconds.
Grand'Maison, who began losing her eyesight at 12 due to macular degeneration, still holds world records in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 freestyle events, plus the 400 individual medley.

Gottell earned her third medal in Beijing — two bronze earlier in the week. The Hamilton resident won a gold in the 100 backstroke and three more bronze medals at the Athens Paralympics.
