Janet McLachlan was introduced to wheelchair basketball after suffering a serious knee injury while attempting to make Canada's national rugby squad for the 2006 World Cup. A teammate suggested she try wheelchair sports to stay in shape while recovering.

McLachlan has been a member of the national wheelchair basketball team since 2008 and competed at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games, where Canada finished fifth, and the 2012 Paralympic Games, where Canada finished sixth.

She was a member of the team that won gold at the 2014 World Championship, bronze in 2010 and a silver medal at the 2011 Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
