Winnipeg's Brittany Schussler and Cindy Klassen both insured spots at the 2012 world all-round speedskating championships with strong finishes in the women's 3,000-metre qualifiers on Saturday.
Schussler came first with a time of four minutes 8.25 seconds, while Klassen took third in 4:09.96. Jilleannne Rookard of the United States finished between the two Canadians in 4:09.73.
Speed Skating Canada is hosting the North America and Oceania regional qualifier for the world championships that includes skaters from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States.
Rookard and Schusser also qualified in the 500-metre event. Rookard was first (39.34) and Schussler second (39.70). Calgary's Brianne Tutt was third in 39.73 seconds.
On the men's side, Regina's Lucas Makowsky qualified in the 500 metres with a second-place finish in 36.35 seconds. Americans Shandi Davis (35.65) and Jonathan Kuck (37.07) finished first and third respectively.
Kuck won the men's 5,000 metres in 6:25.16, while New Zealand's Shane Dobbin (6:28.71) was second and American Patrick Meek (6:30.85) took third.
