Mario Stecher won a Nordic combined World Cup event Saturday in front of his Austria fans for his first victory of the season and 11th overall.

The 33-year-old Stecher, who was sixth after the jumping discipline, had a strong finish in the 10-kilometre cross-country race to hold off a challenge by Germany's Bjoern Kircheisen.

"It's great to win in front of a home crowd," said Stecher, who finished in 25 minutes 46.4 seconds to edge Kircheisen by 0.9 seconds.

"I was very strong throughout the race and my skis were really fast so I must thank my service team for preparing them so well."

Johannes Rydzek of Germany was 15.5 back in third, while world champion Todd Lodwick of the United States was fourth, 15.6 behind Stecher.

Jason Lamy Chappuis of France finished fifth to stay atop the World Cup standings with 385 points. Mikko Kokslien of Norway lies second with 329 points, with Stecher third on 286.

Another Nordic combined event in Ramsau is scheduled for Sunday.
