Canada's Patrick Chan could get to compete at a world championships in his own country in 2013.

The 2013 world figure skating championships have been awarded to London, Ont.

The International Skating Union council also approved Zagreb, Croatia for the European championships in January 2013.

The world championships will be from March 10-17, 2013 at John Labatt Centre.

"We are honoured to once again host the ISU World Figure Skating Championships," Skate Canada CEO William Thompson said in a statement. "All the components to stage an outstanding event are right here in London."

The city, was the site of the Canadian championships in January, will host the worlds for the first time.

"It really provides us with an opportunity to showcase our sport, and offer an unparalleled world-class event," he added.

Canada will host the event for the 10th time and the first since 2006, when Calgary hosted.

The 2011 worlds are in Tokyo, and in 2012 in Nice, France.
