Former heptathlon champ Kluft competes in final event
Says she will retire from athletics
Former heptathlon champion Carolina Kluft helped Sweden win the 400-metre relay Sunday in Goteberg, Sweden in a two-nation annual meet with Finland in what she has said will be her last competition in athletics.
Kluft, 29, ran the third leg of the relay. She cried when she was celebrated by her Sweden teammates and fans at Goteborg's Ullevi stadium, saying "it's sad, wonderful, sombre, fanatastically fun, and also nice."
Kluft dominated the heptathlon for half a decade, winning three world titles and an Olympic gold medal before switching to long jump in 2008.
She struggled with injuries and missed the London Olympics, which she had hoped would be her last major event.
