Ireen Wust wins 3,000m speedskating World Cup event

Olympic champion Ireen Wust beat Dutch teammate Diane Valkenburg for the second time in two days to win the 3,000-metre race at a speedskating World Cup meet on Sunday in Inzell, Germany.

Olympic champion Ireen Wust beat Dutch teammate Diane Valkenburg for the second time in two days to win the 3,000-metre race at a speedskating World Cup meet on Sunday in Inzell, Germany.

Wust and Valkenburg also had the identical 1-2 finish in the 1,500 a day earlier. Wust, the reigning 1,500 Olympic champion and the gold medallist in the 3,000 in 2006, dominated Sunday's race, winning by 3.08 seconds for her first victory of the season over the distance.

World Cup leader Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic was 3.18 seconds behind in third. Sablikova is the reigning Olympic champion in the distance but is battling back problems.

Denis Yuskov of Russia edged World Cup leader Zbigniew Brodka of Poland by 0.02 seconds to take the men's 1,500 in a close race. Brian Hansen of the United States was third, 0.07 seconds behind.

The men's mass start went to World Cup leader Arjan Stroetinga of the Netherlands, who beat Haralds Silovs of Latvia by 1.37 seconds. Christijn Groeneveld of the Netherlands was third. The trio pulled away from the rest of the field early in the race and was nearly 19 seconds ahead.
