Cindy Klassen moves closer to spot at world single distance championships
Winnipeg's Cindy Klassen won the division B 5,000-metre race Wednesday at a speedskating World Cup event in Erfurt, Germany.
Klassen's time of seven minutes, 10.93 seconds moved her into 12th place in qualifying for the 5,000-metre event at the 2013 World Single Distances Championships. The skaters with the top 16 times on the World Cup circuit qualify for the event, which will be held March 21-24 in Sochi, Russia.
Ottawa's Ivanie Blondin finished ninth in 7:17.63.
In women's 500-metre action, Calgary's Anastasia Bucsis tied for 13th place in division A in a time of 38.977 seconds. In division B, Danielle Wotherspoon of Red Deer, Alta., was fourth in 39.59 seconds, Kali Christ of Regina was sixth (39.80) and Kaylin Irvine of Calgary was ninth (40.03).
In the 10,000-metre division A race, Toronto's Jordan Belchos was 12th in a time of 13:18.41.
Olympic champion Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic won the 5,000-meter race to extend her lead in the overall standings.
Sablikova finished in seven minutes, 1.33 seconds, beating Stephanie Beckert of Germany by 1.51 seconds. Another German, Claudia Pechstein, was 5.63 behind.
Sablikova leads after five races with 430 points, followed by Beckert on 350 and Pechstein on 331.
Bob de Jong beat Jorrit Bergsma in the men's 10,000 to cut his Dutch teammate's lead in the overall standings.
De Jong finished in 12:53.56 to win by 1.8 seconds. Olympic champion Lee Seung-hoon of South Korea was third, 26.28 back.
Bergsma now leads with 400 points, 20 more than De Jong, while another Dutchman, Sven Kramer, is third on 300.
