Downhill training runs nixed by bad weather
Training runs for separate World Cup downhill ski races were cancelled Tuesday because of heavy snow.
The men's training session was slated for the Streif course ahead of the classic Hahnenkamm races in Kitzbuehel, Austria.
On Monday, organizers moved forward the initial Tuesday morning start time by more than an hour as bad weather conditions were forecast for the afternoon. The session had to be called off as the snow started earlier than expected.
More downhill training sessions are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.
The 69th edition of the Hahnenkamm races consists of a super-G Friday, a downhill Saturday and a slalom Sunday while the downhill and slalom also make up a super-combined race.
On the women's side, heavy snowfalls also forced organizers to push back a super-G race scheduled for Thursday.
More snow was forecast for the Olympia delle Tofane course Wednesday, and organizers delayed the start of the second training session from 10 a.m. to noon. Another training session will be held Thursday in place of the super-G race, with the two downhills taking place Friday and Saturday as scheduled.
Better weather was expected later in the week.
World Cup rules require at least one training session to be held before a downhill race.
A giant slalom is set for Sunday, and organizers will decide during the week whether to stage the super-G race on Monday or reschedule it for a later date.
Friday's downhill was originally scheduled for Lake Louise, Alta., but was postponed because of bad weather in the Canadian resort earlier this season.
The International Ski Federation, meanwhile, said Tuesday that a women's World Cup downhill race cancelled in Switzerland last month will be staged in Bulgaria in February.
High winds forced the cancellation at St. Moritz on Dec. 21, meaning only one women's downhill was run before the end of the year.
The race will now be held at Bansko on Friday, Feb. 27, when the Bulgarian resort makes its debut as a World Cup venue. It will stage a second downhill on the Saturday and a super-G on the Sunday.
