World junior figure skating championships: Nicolas Nadeau rallies for silver

Nicolas Nadeau of Boisbriand, Que., rallied to finish second in the men's event at the world junior figure skating championships Friday in Debrecen, Hungary.

Nadeau stood eighth following the short program, one spot ahead of eventual winner Daniel Samohin of Israel. Samohin finished with 236.5 points while Nadeau followed with 224.76.

American Tomoki Hiwatashi, who was sixth after the short program, took third with 222.52 points.

"I'm a little surprised to move up that much, other skaters made a lot of mistakes," said Nadeau, a distant 25th at last year's event. "But I'll take it.

"I did my job today and I'm really happy with how it turned out."

Sarah Tamura of Burnaby, B.C., was 16th in the women's short program.
