The Fed Cup tie between Canada and Serbia is down to a best-of-three after the countries split singles matches on Saturday.

Vancouver's Rebecca Marino picked up her first win in the team competition with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Aleksandra Krunic.

The 20-year-old was broken twice in the third set but managed to settle her nerves and hold on.

"It was a tough match today but being able to fight through and play well at the very end was a nice feeling," said Marino. "It feels awesome to have my first Fed Cup win."

Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision to Bojana Jovanovski in her return to competition after an extended layoff.

"It was exciting to play my first match back after five months but it's too bad I couldn't pull it out," said Wozniak. "I felt very good on the court and I think I played well. ... I'm now looking forward to playing even better tomorrow."

The remaining three matches will be held Sunday.

Marino plays Jovanovski before Wozniak goes up against Krunic. The potential deciding doubles rubber will feature Toronto's Sharon Fichman and Marie-Eve Pelletier of Repentigny, Que., against Serbia's Tamara Curovic and Ana Jovanovic.

A win would advance Canada to a world group playoff in April.
