The 20-year-old Canadian from Thornhill, Ont., defeated German Bjorn Phau 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) in the first round of the Australian Open on Tuesday.
Raonic is ranked 152nd in the world compared to No. 85 for the German.
The match lasted just over two hours.
