What if: '84 Oilers
vs. '77 Canadiens Alternate universe. The
fantasy realm. Or fake sports, as some loved ones like to call it.
Like any true sports fan, the Sports Online crew loves fantasy sports. We're hooked.
However, our imaginations aren't reserved to just drafts, trade proposals, waiver wire pickups and number crunching. We also love a good old what-if debate. Who'd win between the '27 Yankees and '84 Tigers? How would the '81 Celtics manage against Shaq and Kobe? And what about Hall vs Oates?
The Heritage Classic provides such fodder for the hockey addict. Which is the better dynasty club: the '76-77 Habs or the '83-84 Oilers? Instead of going around in endless circles, blabbing the virtues of The Great One versus The Flower, we've decided to turn to another friend for guidance.
The Magic 8-ball? No. Carnac the Magnificent? A little warmer, but no. The only way to settle this tete-a-tete is with a friend we call the video game console, in an experiment we like to call Clash of the Dynasties.
We're opposing the computer versions of the '76-77 Habs and the '83-84 Oilers in a video game battle (via ESPN NHL Hockey on Playstation 2) to once and for all decide the ultimate team. Sure, some earlier Canadiens teams could probably give Sather and company a better go at it, but era-wise these teams come the closest to matching up.
The players and rosters are as accurate as can be, given we had to supply the names (the video game doesn't have "the rights," as we in the biz call it, but the game has each player's skills down pat). We've let the machine's artificial intelligence simulate the game and have included a full game summary, complete with a story, boxscore and player stats.
Please note, this exercise is all in fun. In other words, don't blame us if you think Charlie Huddy should have played a more integral part in the final result. Blame the game.
