Taming track's big egos
Sprinting is the track discipline most heavily populated with brash personalities and big egos -- not the sorts of things that are normally conducive to a team sport. Yet the 4X100m and 4X400m relay are precisely that -- team sports -- and all the speed in the world won't help you if you can't pass the baton cleanly, although speed will take you a long way.

Men's 4X100m
"The United States should win. Britain has great depth of young sprinters, and they actually practice the relay, something Canada doesn't really understand, so they should win the silver, and they'd be there if the Americans make a mistake. Jamaica also has a good deal of depth and I'd pick them for the bronze."

Women's 4X100m
"I'd go for the Bahamas again, but it'll be close with the Americans, and it will depend on the baton exchanges. Again, I think the Jamaicans will win the bronze."

Men's 4X400m
"The Americans will win this one, too, because they have such tremendous depth, with Jamaica and probably Nigeria winning the other medals."

Women's 4X400m
"The United States should win this, particularly if Marion Jones runs. She would be potentially a great 400 runner if she put her mind to it, but quite sensibly, she doesn't find it a very enjoyable distance - it's a much more difficult race to run. Jamaica and Russia will likely be in there, too."

  • Running a relay means checking your ego at the door and putting aside arguments over who should take on the anchor leg. That's the role that gets the most attention, but it's not necessarily more important than any of the others. .
