The quintessential throwing event
The essence of the throwing events is flight enabled by power, speed and technique, and no event better embodies those qualities than the javelin. The most spectacular of the throwing events, the javelin offers the spectacle of tall, muscular athletes speeding down a runway, holding aloft stylized spears which they launch into the air for nearly a 100 metres in a graceful arc until they pierce the turf with their tips.

Men
"It's tough to bet against Zelezny. He's easily the most experience, but
he'll be challenged by Parviainen and Gatsioudis. But Zelezny is simply a
phenomenon."

Women
"Menendez has been coming on really strong. Throwing over 70 metres with the
new javelin is really something else, but it's another quirky event, and
you've got to do it one the day it counts..."
