A
test of speed and stamina
The 400m, like its 200m counterpart, is essentially
an endurance sprint with turns to complicate matters. In addition
to the powerful speed and judicious pacing required by the distance,
400m runners need to perfect the technique that will take them through
turns at blistering speeds, while fighting off centrifugal force.
The torque generated by negotiating turns at such speed, not to mention
the demands of sprinting that distance in defiance of the body's limitations,
also makes 400m runners among the most injury prone of track athletes. |

"This is a pretty bleak scene since Michael
Johnson. I'd like Greg Haughton from Jamaica,
and you might say any one of a number of Americans,
maybe Washington. But if Antonio Pettigrew can
win at his age, it doesn't say much for the youngsters.
Obviously,
to everyone's relief, Freeman's not running ...
Lorraine Graham did well in Sydney behind Freeman,
and the ageless Grit Breuer could be in there
to challenge, too - she's looking very good this
season."

If
the 200m can be painful to run, the 400m is roundly considered
the hardest track event -- it has even been dubbed the "man
killer."
