Holmes wins decision over "Butterbean"
Former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes earned a unanimous decision in a 10-round bout against Eric "Butterbean" Esch at the Scope Arena.
The 52-year-old Holmes improved to 69-6 after his first bout in nearly two years. The former WBC and IBF title holder weighed in at a robust 254 pounds.
The 35-year-old Esch, who got his nickname for weighing a plump 334 pounds, earned his fame in toughman competitions, but could not last in his first bout of more than four rounds. Esch fell to 63-3-3.
The fans at Scope Arena saw the bout as disappointing, as they booed the lack of action throughout the fight.
Neither fighter was aggressive in the bout. Esch relied on counter-attacks, while Holmes used his jab, but did more circling then punching.
Jacqui Frazier-Lyde recorded a third-round knockout of Heidi Hartmann in an undercard bout. The 40-year-old Frazier-Lyde is the daughter of former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier. She improved to 9-1 with the victory.
