Tic Tac Toe

>>

One of the best game drills to develop offensive skills.

Explanation of the Drill

This mini game takes place entirely in the offensive zone.

Two teams play three on three inside the zone with a fourth player for each team playing the point position above the top of the circles.

The drill starts with a faceoff. When a team wins a faceoff and every time they gain possession of the puck from the other team, either on a turnover or off a rebound, they must pass it back to their point player and get it back from their point player before they can score.

No one can check the point players and they can’t check each other. The point players can’t score themselves but they can move anywhere along the point position.

If a player passes to the point player (Tic) the point player passes to a player (Tac) and that player passes to another player who scores (Toe) it counts as two goals.

Options

  • A coach can play “point” for both teams. Try the point player at the hash marks or in the corners below the goal line to add a different dynamic. This is good for younger players.

Coach's Tips

>>

To increase the competition, play games to two. Encourage players to move the puck quickly and to communicate.

Player's Tips

>>

Use the point player, not just when you have to due to a change in possession, but to create a 4 on 3 advantage.

Offensively, players should move to openings, get on their off wing when possible for quick shots and move the puck quickly.

There are quick transitions between offense and defence so players have to aware at all time of their potential defensive responsibilities and move quickly to get good defensive positioning on the player they are covering.
