This is a great way to end your practice! Some coaches call this a disguised conditioning drill!

Explanation of the Drill

This drill runs in both directions at both ends of the rink.

Divide the team in half so there are two groups. For each group, half the players will be in the corner below the goal line and half the group will be behind the red line. On the whistle, the first player in line in the corner carries the puck as fast as they can towards the line of players at the red line and then drops the puck so that is stops on the red line.

The player who carried the puck then goes to the end of the line of players at the red line.

As soon as the puck is placed on the red line, two things happen: the first player in line at the red line has a break away on the net at the same end as the group in the corner, shoot out rules, and a second player leaves from the corner with a puck, eventually dropping it at the red line for a breakaway for the next player in line and the drill continues.

The drill runs for a set time, during which the goals are counted and the group that scores the most goals wins. The faster the group skates the more chances they get on net, the more likely they are to score!

Options

  • Try running your defence and the coaches against your forwards to increase the competition. You can run for a set time and count the goals or make it the first team to score a set number of goals.

  • Add a drop to a player at the blueline, back to a drop to a player at the face off dot and then a drop to a player at the redline to make it into a fun conditioning drill!
