The National Hockey League made a surprising move Tuesday, submitting a bid to buy the Phoenix Coyotes out of bankruptcy.

Meanwhile, U.S. businessman Jerry Reinsdorf withdrew his offer, leaving three parties in the hunt to purchase the team: the NHL, a consortium of Canadian and American investors under the name Ice Edge Holdings, and the group led by Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie.
