It was only a matter of time before Sean Avery's mouth landed him in hot water with the NHL.

The Dallas Stars forward was suspended indefinitely by the league for making derogatory comments regarding Calgary Flames defenceman Dion Phaneuf and his girlfriend, Canadian actress Elisha Cuthbert.

Soliciting reporters prior to the Stars' matchup against the Flames at the Pengrowth Saddledome on Tuesday, Avery said: "I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about."

Phaneuf is dating Cuthbert, who is best known for her role on the television series 24. She dated Avery until the summer of 2007.

Avery met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman for a hearing in New York on Thursday alongside Stars co-general manager Brett Hull.

It's time to have your say.

Did Avery cross the line with his disparaging remarks toward Phaneuf and Cuthbert? How long should the Dallas forward be suspended for his latest outburst?
