St. Louis Blues centre Doug Weight underwent surgery to correct an abdominal injury on Friday.
Blues spokesman Frank Buonomo said the team expects Weight's recovery to be complete by the time the 2002-03 season opens.
It was a frustrating season for Weight, one of the NHL's top playmakers, who joined St. Louis following the 2000-01 season after several superb seasons with the Edmonton Oilers.
His numbers for the season were well off his usual standards, as he finished the season with only 15 goals and 34 assists, but that was largely due to missing 20 games after he sprained his pelvis as a result of a Bob Boughner bodycheck in a Feb. 28 game in Calgary.
Weight returned to the lineup in time for the end of the regular season, but was clearly hampered by the injury in the playoffs. He had only one goal and one assist over 10 playoff games, as the Blues eliminated Chicago in the first round, but were ousted by Detroit in the Western Conference semifinal.
