Predators pick up Jan Hlavac

With the acquisitions earlier in the day of Jussi Jokinen and Jeff Halpern, Jan Hlavac became expendable in Tampa Bay.

The Lightning sent Hlavac to Nashville for a seventh-round pick in 2008. The Predators had earlier required Brandon Bochenski from Anaheim.

Hlavac hasn't provided much scoring in his first year in the NHL since 2004, with nine goals and 13 assists in 62 games, and a minus-10 rating.

Hossa for trio of Penguins

Marian Hossa is headed to Pittsburgh with Pascal Dupuis for a package that includes Erik Christensen, Colby Armstrong and first-round draft pick from last year, Angelo Esposito, and a 2008 first-round pick.

One of the most prized players ahead of the deadline, Hossa has 26 goals and 30 assists in 60 games this season, with eight power-play goals and two short-handed markers. The speedy Dupuis has 15 points in 62 games.

Christensen has 20 points (9-11) in 49 games, Armstrong with 24 (9-15) in 54 games. Esposito in his third junior season with the Quebec Remparts.

Story

MORRISON ANALYSIS

Wow. The Penguins have plenty of offence with Crosby, Malkin and now Hossa. Do they have enough grit? Can Hossa play in the playoffs? Interesting questions. Getting a prospect and a first pick is good for Atlanta, while Armstrong and Christensen upgrade up front. They would have liked to have received a work horse defenceman but made the most of the situation.

Winner: Pittsburgh, for now.

Matt Cooke leaving Canucks for Caps

Vancouver has dealt Matt Cooke to Washington for Matt Pettinger, according to TSN.

It would be a trade of gritty forwards who've only played for one team in their NHL career.

Cooke has seven goals and nine assists in 61 games in his 9th season with Vancouver.

Pettinger has two goals and five assists in 56 games in his 7th year with the Capts. At 27, he is two years younger than Cooke and grew up in Victoria.

He has one year left at $1.1 million, according to CP, while Cooke is a UFA on July 1.

Washington have already added Cristobal Huet, Sergei Fedorov in a bid to win the Southeast Division and mark the franchise's first playoff bid since 2003.

Will Vancouver add a top-six forward before deadline's end? Update: David Nonis says he tried.

Story

MORRISON ANALYSIS

Cooke is an unrestricted free agent this summer and wasn't likely going back to Vancouver. He leads the team in hits and was a pest, but they get a younger version in Pettinger who may be able to provide more offence.

Foote spent 13 seasons with the Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques franchise before signing with Columbus in 2005.

Sergei Fedorov has been sent to the Washington Capitals for prospect Ted Ruth, a second-round pick in 2007 who currently plays for Notre Dame.

Fedorov has nine goals and 19 assists in 50 games this season. Washington GM has now acquired goalie Cristobal Huet and Fedorov, both UFA's this summer, without giving up players on the Capitals' roster.

Foote has a goal and 14 assists and is a plus-3 in 63 games this season.

The Foote deal has includes a fourth round pick going to Columbus.

The Blue Jackets are the only NHL franchise yet to make the playoffs.

Story

MORRISON ANALYSIS

Foote didn't want to leave Columbus, but unable to make a deal the Blue Jackets cut their losses in a big way. Foote is a great addition for a Colorado team that has done a nice job at the deadline.
Winner: Tie.

Salei, 33, has three goals and 20 assists in 63 games this season for Florida. The Belarus native has 75 penalty minutes and is a minus-5.

“Ruslan Salei gives our club a solid and reliable asset on the blueline,” said Avalanche Executive Vice President and General Manager Francois Giguere. “We feel he can assume a major role within our defensive corps and provide some added stability in that area.”

Other questions to be determined for Colorado's back end: Will John-Michael Liles leave and will be the Avs target former team members Adam Foote and Rob Blake.
