Unrestricted free agent Martin Lapointe has been picked up the Ottawa Senators for a sixth-round pick in this year's draft.
Lapointe won two Cups as a member of the Detroit Red Wings, and then was famously overpaid for a free agent deal by Boston. He has three goals and four assists in 52 games in his third season with the Blackhawks.
The 34-year-old hasn't played more than 10 minutes in a game since December with Chicago.
MORRISON ANALYSIS
Nice pick up by ths Senators. Lapointe will be a good addition to the dressing room, provides depth and a physical presence. He also has playoff experience. Chicago is reloading and he wasn't playing and wasn't going to be re-signed.
Winner: Ottawa.

A good pick-up to add some gritty depth (Ottawa). Now to get a goalie.

this seems like a bit of a waste of a late-round draft pick by ottawa. 5 years ago lapointe might have made a difference.

Why? What a waste of a trade....we need a real move?...Emery for Roli? We don't need Hossa...we have enough "stars" lets get some depth.

Any chance he can play goal?

Lapointe can help Chris Neil and Mike Fisher grind down the opposition 'D'. I think Murray wanted somebody to help take Neil's place while he recovers from his knee injury. Lapointe had some pretty good playoffs in Detroit, but his days in Chicago were not great. Hopefully he'll do better on a deeper team like Ottawa.
Theres no way Murray can trade for a better goalie than what the Sens already have. We'll see that happen in the off season. Gerber will probably be gone.

Way to underwhelm us again, Sens. Is it possible to trade Emery for some sticks, pucks and a couple of zamboni tires? That would be a noteworthy story for deadline day...

If this is all Murray can get with an hour to go it looks like we are back to a early exit from the playoffs. Isn't there one team out there that would give the Sens a low future draft pick for Emery, I would be happy with a few rolls of tape and some practice pucks.

Whow these GM,s will be right up there with the greats Sam Pollack,Punch,Harry.... Martin LaPoint what a blockbuster almost as big as Wade Belak to Florida

Oh, Mats, you are too noble for this game.
Toronto was my first love in the early 1960's. Then they started to trade their stars. The Duff trade was the tipping point, and not unlike the current bartering.
Maybe an astrologer might foretell this year’s cup winner, but even they are not permitted to shuffle the stars.

Neil - Fisher - Lapointe
That line would not be much fun to play against - hard on the puck big time!!
The NFL line - anyone?

Is this it for Ottawa? Could we do no better? A defence trade or two might have been useful.... or a goalie.

NOT a Habs fan and don't understand that deal with Huet, I think that the Ducks proved last year that you need charactor players to win , that is what I seen today,Some stars moved but the contenders picked the chacacter guys.
Feel bad for M. Cooke from Vancouver to Washington, a hometown boy that has to move the family in a useless trade for both teams.
Enjoyed the blockbuster deals of the leafs as well.unbelieveable(tank nation)
