Richards is a Star

The Tampa Bay Lightning have traded Brad Richards to the Stars.

As predicted earlier in this space, with Mike Smith the centrepiece for Tampa, Johan Holmqvist is going to Dallas, as is a fourth-rounder in 2009..

Also going to the Lightning, shootout specialist Jussi Jokinen and gritty Jeff Halpern. With Boyle staying, Prospal gone and Picard coming, the future looks slightly brighter in Tampa than yesterday.

Richards has 18 goals and 33 assists this season but is a minus-25 with the lowly Lightning. The former Conn Smythe winner earns over $7 million US per season.

"Brad is a difference-maker and one of the premier playmakers in the National Hockey League," said Co-General Manager Les Jackson. "At 27 years of age, he is in the prime of his playing career and a proven winner who has elevated his game to the highest levels in the playoffs. Johan Holmqvist is a reliable NHL goaltender and somebody that we will be confident in each time he is in net."

MORRISON ANALYSIS:

Dallas wanted to get better up front and add to their offence. Richards is a proven winner and if fitted with the right wingers will be good for the Stars, a legitimate number one centre. Holmqvist back fills in net. Smith could be the answer to Tampa's goaltending problems. Jokinen will certainly help on the shootouts and Halpern is a reliable role player. Most important, in addition to solving their goaltending problems the Lightning free up salary.

Winner: Dallas.

Wow. Watch out for the Stars! This is on par with the Lakers pickin up Pau...

I was hoping he would become a Canuck but it appears that the asking price was too steep. Richards is world class but the Stars gave up a lot and took on a huge salary.

While I understand that Darcy Regier had to trade Campbell, it's the general trend that scares me. It seems that the philosophy of this team is that if a Cup is to be won, it needs to be with young players not yet in their prime. Buffalo fans should be worried about this.

How can the Bruins sit back and do nothing? They need a true scorer and some help on D.

Now We might not even make the playoffs. Good job !!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank God Vancouver DIDN'T get him.World class?...who's world? Had one career year and gets paid obscene money for the next two..Let's see what his NEXT contract is worth, boys.

I think the Caps might have made one of the best deals in getting an established goalie to replace an aging Kolig for only a 2nd round pick.

has bob gainey lost his mind, trading the only goalie the habs have? they are playing their best hockey in years and are a shoe in for the playoffs!price better perform or be prepared to here the boo birds come out.if this move doesnt work gainey should step down ,we dont want to be golfing early like the maple leafs, this move is too risky at this time!!!,

I think Pittsburgh gave up too much, unless Hossa signs with them this summer. However, I hope they have a great playoff run!

I cannot believe the Canandiens are depending on Price as their only goalie. If they lose early in the playofs,(assuming they can stay in the top eight), it is absolutely their fault. That was a DUMB move.

I was hoping that Nonis would have attempted to get some more help for his team.
Seeing the competition is tooling up for the run to the post season and have no response?
Judging by his post trade day justification for the lone move of Matt for Matt he doesn't seem to believe the team will do much this season.
As a fan I'm sort of choked. At least Ducks fans will have something to cheer about in June. Us nucks fans can work out our golf game.

I was hoping Brad Richards was going to Vancouver , Marian hossa to Montreal, And Mats Sundin to Calgary. It would of been great to see that.

Hey DJD, I guess you dont watch alot of east coast games ? Brad Richards is a work horse, he did everything for TBAY, PK, powerplay, second line center (only because Vinny and Marty play the top line)yes he is -25 but considering he played 25 minutes per game (which is more than some top defenders play) for the last place team in the East, I think 51 points makes up for it

Youll see what his 7.8m will do in Dallas

Richards is not world class. World class is Crosby, Iginla, Brodeur, Ovechkin, Thornton. Richards is -25 this season with 18 goals. Hardly world class.

Don't get me wrong, he is a good hockey player but let's not get overhyped on this guy.

On the same boat with DJD, Richards is not a world class player...a world class player would make his linemates better while succeeding himself...not the case with him. Maybe the 25 mins per game could be a cut a little in Dallas to allow for more quality shifts..

Why would the Canucks deal for a great player (Richards, Forsberg, etc.) when they are selling out games and collecting big money without spending more? Now that makes sense. S.

To comment on Brad Richards no t being world class,2 of the 5 players listed by brad have stanley cup rings so I would rank Richards ahead of Iggy,Ovechkin and Thornton.Dallas is the only team that matches up against the Ducks to win the West.Don't forget Richards & Khabibulin were the reason TB won the Cup,not LaCavalier or St.louis.Get used to seeing Dallas advances to the West final vs SJ

OH ! Those Habs---- If goalies make saves, goal scorers score. and checkers check , what possibly could be the problem there .They are top Five (5).
Focus is every teams best trade .

My comment has to do with Daniel Alfredsson and his poor hit on Sergei Gonchar. I was watching the Sens/Pens game today on CBC and one particular play has me more concerned and boiling than I can remember. The play is that in which Sergei Gonchar was penalized 4 minutes for cross checking. Frankly, this play has to be called and I don't object in the slightest to the term he received for this infraction. It's what happened immediately prior to Gonchar losing his cool that has me concerned. Daniel Alfredsson was pursuing Gonchar into the Pens zone. Gonchar was obviously hearing feet as the announcers had eluded to as Ottawa had been hitting him hard and fair most of game. But this hit from Alfredsson was not fair. Alfredsson uses his top hand on the stick and pushes Gonchar hard on the back of the lower pants as he is skating at high speed which causes Gonchar to blow up nearly end up face first into the boards avoiding major injury. This type of play has to stop. Hitting is one thing but Daniel Alfredsson is a star player and if he wants to be treated as one, he should play as one. Although I do object to Alfredsson, I do understand that the game of hockey is an emotion one, as you can tell by Gonchar's response to the no call. The officiating staff need to call this play either hitting from behind, tripping or some illegal use of the body. I'm also disappointed that neither PJ Stock nor Ron Maclean made any mention of this in the intermission. Let's make sure that we not only goat the Joneses, the Simons and the Downies of the world.

I'd just like to let Harry Neale know that when he generalizes about Toronto fans not supporting Sundin, he doesn't speak for me. Leaf fans are ridiculed for supporting their team when they don't win and then accused of not supporting Sundin when he supports his team. I don't cut my team loose like some because we're not winning. It doesn't mean I like the fact that they're losing, but it's my team. It's easy to cheer for a team that's winning. The Leafs are my team period.

Heading out on a cold (3 F) night to play goal in a beer league game in Ebensburg, Pa. Watching the HNIC Caps v. Leafs. Just a short note to let you know that old Bruce Boudreau also played in 75-76 for the NAHL Western Division champion Johnstown Jets. That was the season when Universal was in town filming SLAPSHOT. Bruce didn't appear in the movie but his following teammates did:
Dave Hanson, Steve and Jeff Carlson, Guido Tenesi, John Gofton, Ron Docken and Jean Tetreault. How's that for a story for B.B. to tell his grandkids.
Love HNIC...go CBC! Regards from
Tim O. Johnstown, Pa.

In regards into the check into the glass at the players bench (Colarado game)
Most often these hits are intentional.
Bumper pads often fall off, or are not even present in games, and wouldn't much protect one from being hurt when player is hit into them.
The glass should be rounded off on a 20 degree angle to avoid a sudden stop when running into the bumper pad or the glass itself.

This is just a suggestion to avoid players being hit and injured over and over again

Ryan Symth Hit is always going to Happen because he plays so hard. To fix this high risk of injury area and to make it happen less why doesn't the NHL angle the Glass away from the boards at the beginning of the glass edges. The glass also can be cut from the top of boards to the top of the glass at an angle. I think this should be considered for next year along with touch up icing .

I can not believe that Iron Mike is still coach for Calgary Flames...This man does not know the talent that is right in front of him. Robyn Regher is one player that should be left on the bench more that what he is.Either that or a healthy scratch..I have watched a few games to which that bone head has given more scoring chances then anyone else on the Flames team,Yet you never see it on his stats in the paper.
Another player that should maybe be a healthy scratch is Kristian Huselius.I mean come on I've never seen anyone hang on to the puck more then him.He really should learn how to pass.Forget all the fancy moves. If you see the net SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Flames vs Coyotes... Ron Mclean defends the referees call on the disallowed Phaneuf goal. Cleary the goalie was beyond the paint and Iginla has right to the position in front of the net. This was a good goal... period. This league wants more goal scoring so disallowing a goal like this is truly goofy. Maybe the officials should take the time to have a second look via video replay before disallowing such goals.

Hey Ron Mclean,
I believe the rolling puck in the Flames-Coyotes game should have counted as a goal as the part of the puck contacting the ice was over the goal line ,unlike when the puck is lying flat . Why is it that hockey always seems to have these screwy rules, or interpretations of rules. In every other sport: Football- any part of the ball crosses the plane of the line and it,s a TD.,in tennis as long as no part of the ball contacts the line it's out, even though if you looked at the same ball from overhead it might look like the ball was in,etc.,etc.
