With the acquisitions earlier in the day of Jussi Jokinen and Jeff Halpern, Jan Hlavac became expendable in Tampa Bay.

The Lightning sent Hlavac to Nashville for a seventh-round pick in 2008. The Predators had earlier required Brandon Bochenski from Anaheim.

Hlavac hasn't provided much scoring in his first year in the NHL since 2004, with nine goals and 13 assists in 62 games, and a minus-10 rating.

Anaheim also shipped well-travelled Brandon Bochenski to Nashville for future considerations. Bochenski has played for Boston, Chicago and Ottawa since 2005. Bochenski has 10 points in 32 games with the Bruins and Ducks this season.

Bergeron, dealt last year to Long Island from Edmonton, again found himself in the doghouse this season.

He has nine goals, all but on the power play, with nine assists in 46 games with a minus-14 rating.

Brad Stuart is on the move again, heading from Los Angeles to Detroit for second- and fourth-round draft pick. The second rounder is from this year, the other pick next year.

Stuart has been on four teams within the span of a year, going from Boston to Calgary last year before signing with LA.

Story

The Red Wings learned last year and are seeing again now how injuries can pile up and how devastating they are on the back end. Stuart can help offensively and is abrasive when necessary.

Winner: Detroit.

Marian Hossa is headed to Pittsburgh with Pascal Dupuis for a package that includes Erik Christensen, Colby Armstrong and first-round draft pick from last year, Angelo Esposito, and a 2008 first-round pick.

One of the most prized players ahead of the deadline, Hossa has 26 goals and 30 assists in 60 games this season, with eight power-play goals and two short-handed markers. The speedy Dupuis has 15 points in 62 games.

Christensen has 20 points (9-11) in 49 games, Armstrong with 24 (9-15) in 54 games. Esposito in his third junior season with the Quebec Remparts.

Story

MORRISON ANALYSIS

Wow. The Penguins have plenty of offence with Crosby, Malkin and now Hossa. Do they have enough grit? Can Hossa play in the playoffs? Interesting questions. Getting a prospect and a first pick is good for Atlanta, while Armstrong and Christensen upgrade up front. They would have liked to have received a work horse defenceman but made the most of the situation.

Winner: Pittsburgh, for now.

Big defenceman Hal Gill has been traded from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Toronto will get a 2nd round pick this year and a 5th round pick in the 2009 draft.

Gill has two goals and 18 assists this season, during which he makes $2.1 million US.

MORRISON ANALYSIS

Gill has been a good penalty killer for the Leafs and if not over-used can be effective. Leafs had to clear the decks somehow and have a lot of defencemen in the system. It's a pretty decent return for the Leafs.

Winner: Pittsburgh
