Eric Staal chose loyalty with the first overall pick, the Sedin twins were broken up and the Toronto Maple Leafs' lone selection was the final pick after the dust settled on the first NHL all-star draft in Raleigh, N.C., on Friday.

All-star captain Staal selected Carolina teammate Cam Ward after winning the "puck flip" to decide who picked first.

The Hurricanes goaltender is 22-15-5 with a .920 save percentage this season.

Washington's Alex Ovechkin had to wait until the third selection of the draft before he was grabbed by Staal, as Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom went with Tampa Bay superstar Steven Stamkos. His 38 goals and 29 assists for 67 points leads the NHL in scoring.

To nobody's surprise, the Sedin twins were broken up. Team Staal picked Canucks captain Henrik Sedin fifth overall and Team Lidstrom selected his brother Daniel sixth.

It'll be the first time the Sedins will be on opposite sides of the rink in their hockey careers.

Daniel and Henrik sit 3-4 in NHL scoring headed into the all-star game. Daniel Sedin has 27 goals and 37 assists for 64 points, while Henrik three points behind with 11 goals and 50 assists for 61 points.

Toronto's Phil Kessel ended up being the dreaded final pick of the draft, heading to Team Lidstrom as the 36th selection. Kessel has 19 goals and 15 assists to sit third on the Leafs in scoring.

But it wasn't all bad news for Kessel, who was compensated with a new car and $20,000 US to go to the charity of his choice.

Team Lidstrom and Team Staal will face off in the NHL skills competition on Saturday (CBC, CBCSports.ca, 7 p.m. ET), before playing the all-star game on Sunday (CBC, CBCSports.ca, 4 p.m. ET).
