Atlanta also received Patrick Rissmiller in the deal, which saw forward Todd White go the other way.
The Thrashers put Brashear on unconditional waivers with the intent of buying out the remainder of his contract. If he goes unclaimed by all other NHL teams, he will become an unrestricted free agent.
Brashear, a bruising forward with over 2,600 career penalty minutes in the NHL, became expendable in New York when the Rangers signed free-agent winger Derek Boogaard, formerly of the Minnesota Wild, to a four-year, $6.5-million US deal.
Brashear, 38, appeared in 36 games with the Rangers last season, recording one assist and tallying 73 penalty minutes.
The native of Bedford, Indiana, has 85 goals and 205 career points in 1,025 career games with Montreal, Vancouver, Philadelphia, Washington and the Rangers since making his NHL debut during the 1993-94 season.
Rissmiller, 31, spent the majority of last season in the American Hockey League. He also appeared in two NHL games with the Rangers.
White, 35, recorded seven goals and 26 points in 65 games with the Thrashers during an injury-plagued campaign last season. The native of Kanata, Ont., has earned 379 points in 635 career NHL games with Chicago, Philadelphia, Ottawa, Minnesota and Atlanta.
