Chris Chelios was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and speeding on Dec. 28 in a Chicago suburb, it was reported on Tuesday.
The Chicago Tribune first reported the arrest, and ran a booking photo of Chelios.
The arrest came just one day after Chelios had signed a second tryout contract in order to continue playing with the Chicago Wolves in the American Hockey League.
Chelios, who turns 48 later this month, has been playing with the club after he found no takers in the NHL. He has four goals and 13 assists in 26 games with the Wolves.
Chelios has 185 goals and 948 points in 1,644 career NHL games with the Montreal Canadiens (1983-90), Chicago Blackhawks (1990-99) and Detroit Red Wings (1999-2009).
He also won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenceman three times (1989, 1993, 1996), played in 11 NHL all-star games, and was part of three Stanley Cup winners (Montreal in 1986, Detroit in 2002 and 2008).
Chelios holds the NHL record with 266 playoff game appearances.
