Ryan Shannon scored the winning goal Thursday and John Tavares missed the opportunity to extend shootout in the Ottawa Senators' 3-2 victory over the visiting New York Islanders.
Shannon, whose three-game goal streak came to end when he finally failed to score in regulation, was the hero after Alex Kovalev and Mike Fisher beat Dwayne Roloson on Ottawa's first two attempts.
Frans Nielsen and Rob Schremp were successful against Pascal Leclaire, but Tavares struck the side of the net with his deke attempt and the Senators won a shootout for the third straight time to improve to 4-3 in the extra-time format before a crowd of 16,743.
Chris Kelly and Peter Regin scored in regulation time for the Senators while Rob Schremp and Jon Sim had the goals for the Islanders.
Leclaire made 25 saves for the Senators (21-16-4), who have won three of four.
Roloson blocked 34 shots at the other end for the Islanders (16-18-8), who are winless in two of their past three and fell to 2-5 in shootouts this year.
Tavares was held without a point and now has just one goal and one assist in his past 11 games.
Last New Year's Eve, Tavares played a starring role at Scotiabank Place in Canada's wild win over the United States at the world junior championship in which it came back from an early 3-0 deficit to win 7-4.
The Senators were coming off a 4-3 loss at home a night earlier to the Colorado Avalanche, just their sixth loss at home in 23 games this season.
Roloson solid early against the Senators, helping to keep the game goal-less through the opening 20 minutes.
The Islanders failed to record a shot on goal through the first six minutes of the second period before coach Scott Gordon called timeout and gave his players an earful on the bench.
An interference call to Shean Donovan gave them a power-play chance and, after finally testing Leclaire, Schremp then took a cross-ice pass from Streit and fired the puck over the goalie's shoulder to make it 1-0 at the 7:55 mark.
The Senators kept pressing and managed to tie it when Kelly beat Roloson on a rebound 6½ minutes later.
They took the lead in the final minute of the period on a goal that needed to be reviewed. Roloson made the initial stop on Regin's shot, but couldn't cover the puck, which wound up in the net after a pile-up in the crease.
The goal stood up and the Senators were up 2-1.
Sim tied the game just 56 seconds into the third, however, stuffing his own rebound over Leclaire's pad after a failed wraparound attempt.
