Delaney Collins has fallen short in her bid to crack the Canadian Olympic women's hockey team roster: The defender from Pilot Mound, Man. was released Tuesday.

Collins, 32, who was an alternate defenceman on the 2006 Olympic team, has played in five world championships for Canada, winning two silver and three gold.

She was one of 26 players invited to try out for the 2010 Olympic team. With her departure, the roster was reduced to 23 players: three goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards.

Head coach Melody Davidson will release two more players before she names her Olympic squad, but none of them will be goaltenders — Canada will take three to the Games.

Collins, five foot four and 130 pounds, had a goal and four assists in 16 games in the Alberta Midget Hockey League. She had one assist in four games against international squads since the Olympic team began training in Calgary on Aug. 2.

Collins suffered a concussion while playing a men's midget AAA game in October, 2008, and her recovery was long. She didn't start playing games for the Canadian Olympic team until mid-September.

Forward Brianne Jenner and defender Jocelyne Larocque were released from the Canadian women's Olympic hockey team last week. It was announced on Tuesday that both will represent the national under-22 team in the MLP Cup next month.

The six-country MLP Cup will be held in Ravensburg, Germany, Jan. 5-9. Canada won the event for six straight years before settling for silver early this year.

Larocque, 21, has played 22 previous games with the national under-22 team, while Jenner, 18, will make her debut. Jenner is from Oakville, Ont.; Larocque is a Ste. Anne, Man., native.

Canada opens the tournament Jan. 5 against Finland and faces Russia Jan. 7 before the semifinal round the following day. Germany, Sweden and Switzerland make up the second pool of countries.
