Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke was suspended for two games for a hit to the head on New York Rangers forward Artem Ansimov, the NHL announced on Sunday.

The infraction occurred during the third period of Pittsburgh's 8-3 win over the Rangers on Saturday. Cooke incurred a two-minute interference penalty, and Ansimov left the game and did not return.

It is the second suspension for Cooke this calendar year, the first coming in January. In addition to missing two games, Cooke will forfeit more than $29,000 US in salary.

The Rangers and Penguins meet again on Monday, minus Cooke.

The 31-year-old will be eligible to return next Saturday against Chicago.

Cooke was forced to drop the gloves after the Ansimov hit, scuffling with Ryan Callahan.
