Forsberg to stay in Sweden: Canucks GM

Peter Forsberg been battling chronic ankle and foot problems for a few years. (Vesa Moilanen/AFP/Getty Images)Peter Forsberg is staying put in Sweden, and won't attempt to make an NHL comeback this season, said Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis on Monday.
"My understanding is Peter is going to stay and play in Modo [in Sweden] and he won't return to the NHL this year," Gillis told reporters Monday at practice.
Gillis said he learned of the decision Monday morning.
The Canucks were interested in signing the former NHL superstar, who is playing for Modo in the Swedish Elite League, but never made an official offer for the power forward.
The 36-year-old Forsberg was contemplating another attempt to make a comeback in the NHL after his latest bid to return last season failed due to recurring injury woes.
Forsberg has been battling chronic ankle and foot problems for a few years.
"It's more of a day to day thing with his foot as opposed to a situation where he's confident he can play," said Gillis.
"I think it's a tribute to him that he didn't want to put himself in a position where he was taking a roster spot and not being an everyday player in the NHL."
The Swede has 249 goals and 636 assists in 706 career NHL games spread out over 13 seasons.
