New York Rangers' Dane Byers received an automatic one-game suspension, while head coach John Tortorella was fined $10,000 US after the left-winger instigated a fight with less than five minutes to go in Tuesday's game in Vancouver.

Byers, 23, will miss Thursday's game in Edmonton after he picked up the instigator penalty with 1:10 remaining in the game, which the Oilers lost 4-1 to the Canucks.

NHL rules state that a player deemed to be the instigator in the final five minutes of regulation time, or any time in overtime will be suspended and the coach will be on the hook for the fine.

The fine will double for Tortorella for each subsequent infraction this season.

Byers forfeits $2,590.67 US in salary to the National Hockey League Players' Emergency Assistance Fund because of the suspension, while Tortorella's cash goes to the NHL Foundation.
