The Finnish netminder has played better than his Lightning counterpart Mike Smith this season and provided further evidence with a stellar 40-save effort in a 2-1 overtime win against Toronto. Niittymaki stopped Maple Leafs forward Phil Kessel, who made his Toronto debut, on each of his career-high 10 shots.
SECOND STAR: Chris Osgood, Detroit Red Wings
The 36-year-old goalie already has been pulled twice this season, but he rebounded for a 29-save shutout for Detroit in a 2-0 victory against Boston. It was his 50th career shutout and 394th win.
THIRD STAR: Ryan Kesler, Vancouver Canucks
The rugged Canucks forward set up three goals, two by Mikael Samuelsson, in Vancouver’s 4-1 win against the Rangers. The Canucks have won three of four in the absence of Roberto Luongo.
