Gustavsson, who is expected to be out for a week with a groin injury, will be replaced by Joey MacDonald of the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies.
Maple Leafs head coach Ron Wilson said on Wednesday that Gustavsson, nicknamed the Monster, would likely be at practice on Thursday.
MacDonald is coming off a 32-save performance in a 3-2 season-opening win for the Marlies against the Hamilton Bulldogs on Sunday.
Gustavsson has seen action in two of Toronto's first three games, posting a 3.09 goals-against average in 97 minutes, 27 seconds of work.
