Reigning league MVP and Washington Capitals left-winger Alex Ovechkin was named the NHL's first star of the week Monday following his pair of three-point performances.

The 24-year-old Ovechkin scored two goals and an assist in a 4-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday and added a goal and two assists in a 6-4 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday night.

Colorado Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson was named the second star of the week after helping his team start the season 2-0. Anderson stopped 73 of 74 and owns a 1.00 goals-against average, .973 save percentage and one shutout.

Anderson signed with Colorado as a free agent on July 1 after spending the last three seasons with the Florida Panthers. He finished third among NHL goaltenders last season with a .924 save percentage and posted a 15-7-5 record in 31 appearances.

After posting two goals and two assists in St. Louis' two-game sweep of the Detroit Red Wings in Stockholm, Keith Tkachuk was named third star.
