The Montreal Canadiens will be without Andrei Markov for up to four months after he suffered a lacerated tendon in his ankle.

Markov underwent surgery in Toronto Thursday night and was released Friday morning.

The injury happened when the veteran defenceman collided with goalie Carey Price in Thursday's 4-3 overtime win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Centre.

It is expected the Canadiens will recall Yannick Weber from the Hamilton Bulldogs, the team's AHL affiliate.

Last season, Markov tallied 12 goals and 52 assists in 78 games before missing the last four games and the playoffs after a shoulder injury.
