Edmonton goalie Nikolai Khabibulin and Vancouver forward Mason Raymond battle for the loose puck in Sunday's pre-season finale. (Jimmy Jeong/Canadian Press)Tom Gilbert blasted a shot from the point over the shoulder of goalie Cory Schneider to give the Edmonton Oilers a 5-4 overtime victory over the Vancouver Canucks in the pre-season finale for both clubs.
Gilbert's goal at 1:57 of overtime at Rexall Place on Sunday was set up by a faceoff win by Gilbert Brulé. Dustin Penner nudged the puck back to Gilbert, who teed off.
The result allowed Edmonton to finish the NHL exhibition slate on a winning note after losing their four previous games. The Oilers finished 4-3-1.
Mike Comrie scored twice for Edmonton, with Shawn Horcoff and Jean-François Jacques each adding a goal and an assist. Ales Hemsky set up two goals.
Vancouver (7-0-2) never lost in regulation throughout the pre-season.
Kyle Wellwood, Sami Salo, Henrik Sedin and Christian Ehrhoff scored for the Canucks, who had fought back from a 3-1 deficit. Russian rookie Sergei Shirokov finished with two assists.
The Canucks will kick off their season on Hockey Night in Canada on Thursday in Calgary (CBC, CBCSports.ca, 7 p.m. ET).
Alberta rivals face off
The Oilers will also debut against the Flames on HNIC, on Saturday (CBC, CBCSports.ca, 8 p.m. MT).
Edmonton goalie Nikolai Khabibulin and the Canucks' Schneider each finished with 23 saves.
Comrie was the proverbial Johnny-on-the-spot in the first period. The first goal was all about Hemsky, who dazzled through the Vancouver end and fed Comrie alone at the side of the net.
Wellwood soon tied the game. Willie Mitchell sprang Wellwood on a breakaway and the forward made no mistake on his backhand move on Khabibulin.
But Comrie was a beneficiary again, this time from defenceman Lubomir Visnovsky, who moved into the slot before making a deft side pass to the centre for another easy put-in at the 15:15 mark.
Jacques, who brings much-needed size to Edmonton's forward corps, continued his strong bid for a regular season gig.
"It's really helped a lot playing with those [Hemsky and Horcoff]," Jacques said. "I know what I have to do playing with them. They can both put the puck right on the tape of my stick.
"There are a couple of things I would like to have done a bit better in my first couple games but I feel my game is coming around. I've really tried to focus on my patience with the puck the last couple games. Overall, I am pretty happy with the camp that I have had."
First, he flipped a cross-ice pass through the slot to Horcoff for a 3-1 lead near the end of the first, and he potted the goal in the second that put the Oilers up 4-3.
In between, the Canucks had tied the score with a pair of power-play markers. Salo fully got into a slapshot from the left circle, with Daniel Sedin feeding brother Henrik on a play similar to the Horcoff goal.
Shirokov assisted on both goals.
Exuding confidence
"These games don't really matter in the end, but it is always nice to get some wins," said Daniel Sedin. "We know the system really well and we all know that we can play it.
"We're very confident going into the season. We have a great group of guys here and we all work really well together."
Ehrhoff showed off the kind of mobility the Canucks expect he'll add to the back end, smoothly skating over the Edmonton blue-line and beating Khabibulin, assisted by Cody Hodgson.
It was the fifth consecutive power-play goal in the contest.
Oilers forward Sam Gagner skated in on Schneider on a two-on-one later in the period, but didn't get a strong shot on net.
Each team had two shots in overtime despite the short span, with Gilbert ending the pre-season for all concerned.
