New Jersey Devils forward Patrik Elias underwent groin surgery and is expected to be out three to six weeks, the club announced on Wednesday.

Elias had 31 goals and 47 assists in 77 games last season.

"He had a lot of scar tissue that had been built up in that area," Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello told the team's website. "[The doctor] simply broke up the scar tissue. Everything went extremely well; what we're using as a time frame is anywhere from three to six weeks."

The 33-year-old has spent all 822 career regular season games with the Devils. He has scored 295 goals and added 411 assists for 706 points.

He has added 113 points in 133 playoff games, getting his name on the Stanley Cup twice with New Jersey (2000, 2003).

New Jersey begins the regular season on Oct. 3 against Philadelphia.
