The Hurricanes on Tuesday bought out the remaining year on the contract of fellow blue-liner Frantisek Kaberle, who was set to earn $2.2 million US next season.
Instead, he will collect almost $1.5 million over the next two campaigns.
Kaberle, 35, scored the winning goal in Game 7 of the 2006 Stanley Cup final against Edmonton.
He had nine goals and 73 assists with Carolina from 2005-09.
The Czech rearguard collected eight points in 30 games last season after beginning the year on the sidelines with a fractured right foot.
Kaberle was the subject of trade rumours last year and later placed on waivers.
His exit comes after the Hurricanes reshaped their defence by signing Andrew Alberts to a two-year deal and reacquiring Aaron Ward from Boston.
Tomas Kaberle, a bargain at $4.25 million on the Toronto Maple Leafs blue-line, is considered general manager Brian Burke's best trade chip in hopes of securing a top-six forward over the summer.
