The Buffalo Sabres on Saturday announced the signing of veteran defenceman Joe DiPenta.

DiPenta, 30, spent last season in the Swedish Elite League, playing for Frolunda. The Barrie, Ont., native has scored six goals and 17 assists in 174 NHL games played with Atlanta and Anaheim.

DiPenta was a reliable depth defenceman for the Ducks during their 2007 Stanley Cup run, appearing in 16 playoff games for the eventual champions.

The six-foot-two blue liner was playing for Boston University when drafted by the Florida Panthers in 1998. He went on to play for the Halifax Mooseheads in the Quebec junior league before turning pro.

Financial details of the one-year deal were not released.
