The Pittsburgh Penguins appointed Tom Fitzgerald to the newly created position of assistant to general manager Ray Shero on Friday.

Fitzgerald was already the Penguins' director of player personnel when he took on the job of assistant coach to Dan Bylsma, who replaced Michel Therrien behind the bench on Feb. 15.

Pittsburgh went on to capture the franchise's third Stanley Cup.

A former player, Fitzgerald faced the decision of returning as a member of the coaching staff or rejoining the front office.

Fitzgerald will oversee the scouting of prospects in junior hockey, college, Europe and the team's AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Dan MacKinnon replaces Fitzgerald as director of player personnel and will be in charge of Pittsburgh's pro scouting.
