The Boston Bruins confirmed Wednesday that defenceman Andrew Ference had successful surgery to repair an abdominal hernia and a torn groin.

The procedure was performed at Massachusetts General Hospital in Danvers, Mass.

Ference, 30, is expected to fully recover in four to six weeks.

The Edmonton native played 47 games for Boston this season, posting one goal and 15 assists for 16 points with a career-best plus-7 rating.

Ference has compiled 24 goals and 133 points in 519 games over nine NHL seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames and Bruins.

He was drafted in the eighth round (208th overall) by Pittsburgh in 1997.
