Kyle McLaren's return to the National Hockey League and departure from San Jose is on hold.

The Philadelphia Flyers announced Friday they have nullified their trade with the Sharks after the defenceman failed his physical.

McLaren, who suffered a hand injury in December while playing for the Worcester Sharks of the American Hockey League, was to be assigned to the Flyers' AHL affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms.

"Kyle has been very professional about his situation this season," San Jose general manager Doug Wilson said in the team's news release. "From the beginning of the year, we made a commitment to Kyle to find an opportunity for him to play in the National Hockey League.

"Unfortunately, this deal didn't work out but Kyle will return to the organization and work towards the full recovery of his hand."

McLaren was acquired by Philadelphia on Wednesday in exchange for a sixth-round pick in this summer's NHL entry draft.

The 31-year-old has six assists and a plus-2 rating in 17 games with the AHL Sharks this season.

In 302 career games with San Jose, he posted 83 points (12 goals, 71 assists) with 301 penalty minutes and a plus-19 rating.
