NHL suspends Wild's Boogaard 5 games

Last Updated: Saturday, February 28, 2009 | 8:25 PM ET

The NHL handed out a swift penalty for a wayward elbow for the second consecutive day, suspending Derek Boogaard of the Minnesota Wild for five games.

Boogaard elbowed Calgary's Brandon Prust in the head with just over one minute left in Minnesota's 4-1 loss on Friday night.

Boogaard will not be eligible until March 10. He will also forfeit over $23,000 in salary.

The Flames were tight-lipped about Prust's status, but have recalled Warren Peters from the American Hockey League ahead of their home game Sunday against Tampa Bay.

Brendan Witt of the New York Islanders was suspended five games by the NHL on Friday for elbowing Toronto's Niklas Hagman the previous night.
