Ottawa Senators goaltender Martin Gerber was demoted Tuesday to the AHL, putting his future with the team in doubt.

Gerber, 34, was placed on waivers last Thursday but he went unclaimed.

Senators general manager Bryan Murray told reporters Tuesday that only one team, believed to be the Calgary Flames, expressed a mild interest.

"He is disappointed," Murray said. "But he understands the business enough to know that if it is not going to work here he has got to go play and, hopefully, it will work that his career doesn't end in Ottawa, that he has another team and other options as he goes forward."

Gerber must clear waivers to be recalled to the NHL, which puts Ottawa at risk of paying half of his salary should he claimed by another team.

Gerber is making $3.7 million US in the final season of a three-year, $11.1-million US contract he signed with the Senators on July 1, 2006.

Gerber hasn't tended goal since a 6-4 loss to the Boston Bruins on Jan. 8.

Since then, he has been listed as a healthy scratch behind rookie Brian Elliott and Alex Auld.

Gerber is 4-9-1 with a 2.86 goals-against average and one shutout in 14 games this season, his third in the nation's capital.

He is 104-73-14 with seven ties and a 2.61 GAA in 214 games over six NHL seasons with the Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes and Senators.

Gerber was drafted in the eighth round (232nd overall) by Anaheim in 2001.
