Peter Forsberg is back skating to test his wonky right foot, and admits this could be his last chance at an NHL comeback.

"If it doesn't work now I'm forced to give it up for good," Forsberg told Swedish tabloid Expressen on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old forward — a former NHL scoring champion and MVP in his heyday with the Colorado Avalanche — rejoined the team late last season but was hampered by injuries and didn't return for 2008-09.

Forsberg said he's skating in his hometown of Ornskoldsvik, Sweden, this month to test his right foot and ankle before making any decision about another comeback.

"Where I will play in that case is a later decision," he added.

Expressen has reported that Forsberg's foot problem stems from a muscle imbalance that causes pain and swelling.

Forsberg hasn't been on an NHL team's roster for a full season since 2006-07, when he played a combined 57 games for the Philadelphia Flyers and Nashville Predators.

The rugged forward played well in his cameo with Colorado last season, registering 14 points (one goal) in nine regular-season games, and five points (one goal) in seven playoff contests. But he was bothered by injuries that kept him out of nine of 18 regular-season games and three of four games in the second round of the playoffs.

Forsberg won Stanley Cups in 1996 and 2001 with the Avalanche. He captured the Hart Trophy as the NHL's MVP in 2003 after leading the league with 106 points, including 29 goals.
