Martin Gerber is headed to the AHL's Binghamton Senators. (Darryl Dyck/Canadian Press)Much-maligned netminder Martin Gerber is headed to the AHL for what the Ottawa Senators call "a two-week conditioning assignment."
Gerber, 34, hasn't tended goal since Jan. 8, when he lost 6-4 to the Boston Bruins.
He has been listed as a healthy scratch in Ottawa's two games since, with rookie Brian Elliott handed the starts and Alex Auld serving as backup.
Elliott is 2-1-0 since he was recalled from the Binghamton Senators last Friday, following up a 2-0 loss to the New York Rangers with 5-1 and 3-2 wins over the Carolina Hurricanes and Atlanta Thrashers, respectively.
Elliott has tended goal four times for Ottawa, three times this season and once on Oct. 10, 2007.
Gerber is 4-9-1 with a 2.86 goals-against average and one shutout in 14 games this season, his third in the nation's capital.
He is 104-73-14 with seven ties and a 2.61 GAA in 214 games over six NHL seasons with the Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes and Senators.
Gerber was drafted in the eighth round (232nd overall) by Anaheim in 2001.
