Chicago's Matt Walker, left, and George Parros of Anaheim scrap in the second period of Friday's game. (Henry Di Rocco/Associated Press)Ryan Getzlaf's goal in the second period was the only score as Anaheim goaltender Jonas Hiller made 26 saves in a 1-0 home win over the Chicago Blackhawks.
It was backup Hiller's second shutout of the season. The Swiss goalie has allowed just 12 goals in seven starts.
He was thrust into the starter's role after No. 1 netminder Jean-Sebastien Giguere unexpectedly left for Montreal due to family reasons. Giguere is expected to return in time for the team's game on Sunday against Carolina.
Hiller came up particularly big in the second, when Chicago held a 15-7 advantage in shots.
"Sometimes you have to be lucky," said Hiller. "They had two or three open nets, and they missed all of them. All I did was try to put something there so the players had to think where they were going to shoot.
"Smetimes that's enough to make them miss the net."
Bobby Ryan of the Ducks outworked the Chicago defence to set in motion the only goal. Corey Perry picked up the loose puck near the boards and fed Getzlaf in the slot.
Getzlaf was stopped by Cristobal Huet on the first attempt, but his backhand followup was true for his ninth of the season at the 15:19 mark.
Anaheim (13-9-3) has allowed just two goals over the course of three consecutive wins.
Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said it was one of those games where both teams seemed to be labouring at times.
"I think the games immediately after Thanksgiving seem to be a little bit different," said Carlyle. "I don't think either team executed to the level that I think their coaches would be happy with."
Huet finished with 20 saves and is without a win since Nov. 9 against Calgary. He played in consecutive games after Nikolai Khabibulin was injured in the team's game in San Jose on Wednesday.
Khabibulin is day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.
Chicago has lost the first two games of its California trip, after settling for a 3-2 overtime loss against the Sharks.
Captain Jonathan Toews scored both goals in that game.
"We have to find ways to score goals right now," said Toews after the Anaheim loss. "The last couple of games we have struggled. I don't know what it is right now, but we have to find ways to put the puck in the net."
The Blackhawks (10-5-6) will play in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon.
Anaheim has won eight of the last 10 matchups between the clubs.
